The Alabama-Tombigbee Regional Commission Traffic Safety Program operates in eight of the ten counties within the Southwest Region. There are 22 local law enforcement agencies that participate in the program. The Highway Traffic Safety Office provides funding for local sheriff departments and police departments within the region. These funds are used to target high risk areas for DUI’s, speeding and child restraint violations. The goal of this program is to decrease the amount of traffic related crashes and deaths by targeting speeders and individuals “Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol”.
The ATRC Highway Traffic Safety Program also disseminates public and educational information on all aspects of public safety. This Program realizes that there is a great need to inform and educate the public on highway traffic safety issues. Additionally, various programs have been implemented to address Child Passenger Safety, Seatbelt Usage and Injury Prevention. This Program serves over 182,186 people in a 7,196 square mile radius which represents 4.1% of the State of Alabama.
